General comment on data set ecoQuery: https://ecoquery.ecoinvent.org/3.10/cutoff/dataset/5835/documentation This dataset represents the transformation of electricity voltage from medium to low voltage. The losses are based on electricity generation and trade statistics: IEA World Energy Statistics and Balances, ISSN: 16834240, https://doi.org/10.1787/enestats-data-en Definition of the voltage levels: - High voltage level above 24 kV (large scale industry) - Medium voltage level between 1 kV and 24 kV (medium to small scale industry, service sector and public buildings) - Low voltage level below 1 kV (Households) This activity starts with the medium voltage electricity arriving at the transformer station. This activity ends with 1kWh of medium voltage electricity transformed to low voltage. This dataset includes the losses during voltage transformation. It doesn't include the transformer station itself as this is included in the dataset for the transmission network.

Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system Transformers are essential components of the electricity grid. They connect the different voltage levels.;Big power plants feed the electricity at a very high voltage to the electricity grid. Transformers between 600 MVA and 80 MVA can be found in substations, where the high transmission voltage is transformed to the medium distribution voltage. In an additional step the medium voltage is transformed to low voltage using transformers below 2.5 MVA. The small transformers below 2.5 MVA are allocated to the low voltage level, whereas all the other transformers are allocated to the medium voltage level.

General comment Calculated value/estimation. This value compensates for the losses during transformation from high to medium voltage. The calculation is made based on total electricity losses between net electricity available at the busbar and the use of electricity calculated based on the IEA electricity information, data valid for the year 2020. These total losses over the whole chain are then allocated to the different voltage levels as well as transformation and transmission losses based on information in Itten et al. 2014. For details please see the documentation available on ecoQuery. IEA. 2016. Electricity Information 2016. International Energy Agency (IEA), Paris Cedex (FR).
